Children and the Dentist
Maintaining good oral hygiene is a very important part of maintaining good overall health. That is not just true for adults, but for children as well. Many parents think that since their child’s baby teeth will obviously fall out and be replaced, that a visit to the dentist is not important. That is not the case. There are many issues that can start with the growth of baby teeth that can lead to problems with a child’s teeth or gums forever. That is why it is so important to bring your child to the dentist.
When should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?
It is recommended that you bring your child to the dentist right around their first birthday. The dentist will monitor the child’s development of teeth and the health of their gums. Other things the dentist will keep an eye out for is any irritations or diseases of the gums.
What can I expect?
Children can often become very frightened by visiting the dentist, and it is the first visit that can help deter them from thinking of the dentist as something scary. It is recommended that you stay calm, since a parent’s anxiety can often rub off on the child. It also helps if, prior to your first appointment, you get the child involved, teaching them about the importance of a healthy mouth. This can help them be more comfortable when visiting the dentist. Different children react in different ways, but it is always best when the parent’s remain calm.
